Greenfield tornado: Authorities confirm 4 killed, dozens injured in Tuesday's storm
Iowa authorities have confirmed four people were killed and at least 35 were injured in Greenfield when a fierce tornado blew through town.The tornado, tentatively rated an EF-3, ripped through Greenfield and left damage throughout the city on Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday evening, the Iowa Department of Public Safety released an official fatality count of four deaths. The names and ages of those killed are not being released by officials at this time.According to DPS, the number of injured is "likely higher" than 35, but that number reflects only patients who were treated for injuries at designated alternate care sites. At least 14 patients were transported to other hospitals by various EMS services.MercyOne, which manages the Adair County Health System, also confirmed on Wednesday that the hospital based in Greenfield sustained significant damage and that staff and patients were evacuated after the storm. MercyOne said that there were no injuries to patients or staff inside the hospital during the storm.The Greenfield hospital will remain closed until further assessments can be completed, and it could be weeks or even months to fully repair the damage.While the hospital remains closed, Greenfield residents can receive care at several area locations:A 24/7 urgent care clinic is operating in the west wing of the Nodaway Valley Elementary School.The MercyOne Mobile Unit is on the west side of the Nodaway Valley Elementary School for the rest of the week.Primary care services will begin on Thursday at the Nodaway Valley Elementary School.
