Here’s a list of temporary, pop-up theme cafes in Tokyo and around Japan in 2024. As well as permanent themed restaurants, there are lots of limited time, collaboration cafes with popular characters, movies and games. They’re usually announced near the time of opening, so check back to see what’s new.
Making a reservation is highly recommended, because they’re very popular!

Osaka: Hotel New Otani, Makuhari
12th July – 31st August 2024
Hotel New Otani in Osaka is holding a super-cute Sumikko Gurasshi sweets buffet. The theme is: the Sumikko Gurasshi characters visit the home of polar bear, so everything’s snowy and arctic! The desserts and cakes are so kawaii, in pastel colours, and their are cute float drinks that look just like the characters. As with most theme cafes, advance booking is highly recommended.
Yokohama: Hakkejima Sea Paradise (an easy day trip from Tokyo)

Ok so this isn’t strictly a theme cafe, but I thought you’d be interested! And there is a cafe… Hakkejima Sea Paradise, an aquarium in Yokohama, currently has a collaboration with Animal Crossing. What a perfect combination! There’s a stamp rally, special merch, a special check-in for the My Nintendo app, and you can hunt for scallops just like in the game. And there are coffees from the cafe in Animal Crossing!

Celebrate the release of the new animated film “`”Detective Conan: The Million Dollar Five Star” with a visit to their pop-up theme cafe! It has a garden party theme, and features characters who star in the film, including Phantom Thief Kid, Heiji Hattori and Conan Edogawa.

Korilakkuma is a white teddy bear from the Rilakkuma series. To celebrate their 20th anniversary, there’s a pop-up theme cafe in Tokyo. The menu features strawberries, which are Korilakkuma’s favourite food.

A special event for the 20th anniversary of Jump Shop, which is the official Shonen Jump store, selling merch from anime and manga including One Piece and Bleach. There’ll be a shop and “Kissa Jump”, a theme cafe (kissaten = cafe).

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Yokai Watch, there’s a pop-up theme cafe featuring Yokai Watch and Yokai Gakuen Y. There’ll be lots of drinks and desserts, including pancakes featuring a surprise character.

Just in time for Star Wars Day on May 4th, there’s a Star Wars theme cafe in Tokyo! It’s at Oh My Cafe, which always hosts Disney themed cafes. Now’s your chance to try the potion bread that Rey ate in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Groo Groo’s chowder and blue and green milk.

Rather than a full sit-down cafe, Animate Cafe Stand is more of a take-out counter serving drinks and snacks. For a limited time, they’re serving drinks and fruit sandwiches with a Naruto theme. And you get special commemorative coasters for each drink you order.

Tree Village is an official Japanese TV station shop. They’re hosting an Ouran High School Host Club Wonderland Cafe in Tokyo, Osaka and f*ckuoka, with cute dishes, drinks and special merchandise.

A pop-up theme cafe celebrating the 20th anniversary of Monster Hunter. The menu’s inspired by food from the towns and villages in the games. The selection on the menu will change regularly, so you can visit more than once and try new things.

Mofusand’s such a popular character at the moment that it makes perfect sense there should be a theme cafe. The theme is a fresh produce market, with the cats wrapped in fruit and vegetables.

A pop-up coffee shop seems perfect for Coffee Talk, a game where you have conversations over coffee! At the pop-up cafe you can try drinks from the game, including hibiscus tea and “Galahad” and “Blue Lightning”, while enjoying the official soundtrack.
Remember to take a look round the rest of Parco department store while you’re there, for the Pokemon store, Nintendo Store, Capcom and lots more!

A theme cafe featuring the RPG game Omori by OMOCAT. On Sunny’s birthday (20th July), there’ll be a special postcard for everyone who orders Sunny’s birthday cake!

Chiikawa is a kawaii character originally from an online manga, now made into an anime. And now they have a ramen restaurant! There are several ramen dishes with cute fish cake decorations, and drinks in themed bottles. Perhaps more excitingly, you can buy the bowls, which have a special Chiikawa design, and other goods including a Chiikawa chef’s apron.

Sweets Paradise is a dessert buffet chain in Japan. For a limited time, seven stores will have a special menu featuring the anime Sound Euphonium, and the third season which has just been released. There are several dishes with pictures of the characters, plus cafe au lait / hot chocolate with a random character printed on the foam, and a cute Tuba-kun cream soda.

GiGO arcade in Akihabara is holding a pop-up theme cafe with Love Live! There’s a range of cute dishes, plus drinks for each of the characters so you can choose your favourite.
As well as the main cafe in Akihabara, there’ll also be collaboration cafe stands at GiGO arcades in Sapporo (Norbesa), Sendai, Akihabara Building 2, Sasashima, Namba Sennichimae, Okayama, f*ckuoka Tenjin and Kumamoto.
