What to Know

Critics Consensus

Commanding the camera's full attention amidst the French countryside, Clive Owen makes for a mesmerizingly craggy Sam Spade even as the series around him struggles to live up to its hallowed lineage.

Monsieur Spade: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Lili Loofbourow Washington Post Despite its brevity, “Monsieur Spade” lets its world unfurl slowly, with continental ease. Jan 22, 2024 Full Review Monsieur Spade: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Tim Grierson The Daily Beast The one-time Oscar nominee so perfectly embodies Spade’s spiritual exhaustion and profound pessimism that you wonder why you’re not loving every single second. The culprit is the execution—and, perhaps, in the show’s most cutting twist, Owen himself. Jan 17, 2024 Full Review Monsieur Spade: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Alan Sepinwall Rolling Stone Monsieur Spade feels like it should be wittier, and livelier, than this. It’s not terrible, but it’s a big disappointment, given the idea and the people involved. Jan 16, 2024 Full Review Monsieur Spade: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Akos Peterbencze The Screen An original story with top-notch writing, directing, and acting wrapped in romanticized nostalgia in a virtually extinct genre rarely feels this fresh and vibrant. Feb 16, 2024 Full Review Monsieur Spade: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Joly Herman Common Sense Media Teens might find this story slow-moving and confusing, though those teens who've explored the detective genre will relate more readily. Feb 7, 2024 Full Review Monsieur Spade: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Neely Swanson Beverly Hills Courier The pace is glacial, made even more so because it takes so long to get to its unsatisfying resolution. So much potential wasted with such a good cast. Truly a case of style over substance. Jan 26, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Slow burn at first, but quite satisfying for fans of quality classic noir; bleak tone, snappy Bogey-esque banter, beautiful setting, and an interesting historical context to boot, make this one of the better series this year. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/31/24 Full Review Lee C It's visually interesting and starts off well, but drops off precipitously into a great hole, as it were, in the final episode, which ruins the entire rest of the series. Not recommended! Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/19/24 Full Review Pompous M For the most part an enjoyable diversion . Well acted with lavish period detail. Clive Owen gives a committed performance, but has to struggle through some trudging dialogue which doesn't sit well within the idiom .Shame too about the convoluted plot , needlessly complex in parts, some of it trite and very Dan Brown. Less said about the final episode the better, Agatha Chistie on a very bad day. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review Ken L The photography and generally French setting are wonderful (there are a few scenes that purport to be Northern Africa). I was attracted to it in the first few minutes. It LOOKED warm and wonderful. The music (usually excellent period jazz is superb as well.) The acting is strong, too. But the writing and the plot just wear one down. Great writing is not optional if one wants to be a great movie/series. The plot is very confusing, strung together with great swaths of snappy Spadesque dialogue that grows tedious after awhile. By the last half of the final episode, I was looking at my watch wondering, hoping for the end to come soon. Then the last few minutes were just plain dumb with a bunch of arrogant characters (the way they were written) coolly insulting one another as the train wreck came to a grateful end. It all felt so contrived. I'd love to get the soundtrack, again, the music is great, but would I watch it again? Not a chance. Do I wish I'd just skipped it and spent the 6+ hours doing something else? Definitely! When I saw the first few minutes of the series would I have guessed this is what my final conclusion would be? No. But that's where I am now. Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/24 Full Review David M A Beautifully shot, directed, written series that showcases Clive Owen wonderfully as the world weary Sam Spade of Legend in the South of France. It is a series in the style of old which I love. Viewers of Modern TV may see pace difference, but I feel like every moment there is sparkling dialogue and something going on that does have something going on with the story even though you might not understand it at the time. Such a surprise to find this series wasn't really publicized all that much, but I am glad it's here! Spade is back! Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Robert B The story is well-crafted, the acting is top-notch, and the structure of the plot and how it's laid-out, with subtle glimpses of backstory, make this an entirely engaging show to watch. Beyond the settings and language, it is distinctly european in flavour, which makes it refreshing. Definitely Clive Owen at his best.I am bewildered by some of the middling reviews. Maybe the structure and feel and language is too sophisticated for some. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/17/24 Full Review Read all reviews
