High School Football: Unbeaten Whiteford tops Region rankings (2024)

Michigan's high school football season has reached the midway point.

Five regular-season games have been played and four remain.

Whiteford is the only Monroe County Region team to make it to this point without a loss, but Flat Rock, Airport, Gibraltar Carlson, and Summerfield all stand at 4-1.

On the other end of the spectrum, Jefferson is the Region's only winless squad.

At the beginning of the season, the Monroe New sports staff ranked the 14 Monroe County Region teams.

Those rankings have aged pretty well.

In the new mid-season poll, six teams, including No. 1 Whiteford, are in the exact same spot as they were before the season. Three moved up or down just one spot.

Here's a look at the revised rankings:

1. (1 in the pre-season poll) WHITEFORD (5-0): It hasn't always been easy for the Bobcats, but they have passed every test. They know what it takes to win and can make the big plays in tough situations. Coach Todd Thieken's team seems poised to repeat as Tri-County Conference champs and make another long state playoff run.

2. (5) MONROE (3-2): New coach Kyle Reed took the Trojans back in time, bringing back the offense they used under former coach Ralph Carducci. The plan has been working very well so far. The defense has been outstanding, the Trojans are 3-0 at home and they gave perennial power Saline a great battle last week.

3. (3) FLAT ROCK (4-1): The Rams made a valiant comeback last week against Riverview. It was a disappointing loss, but everything is still in front of coach Buck Reaume's team. Flat Rock still can win the Huron League and make a state playoff run.

4. (4) AIRPORT (4-1): The only blemish on the record is a loss to Flat Rock. After Riverview's win over Flat Rock last week, the Jets are in charge of their own destiny in the Huron League. They will earn a least a share of the title with wins in the next three weeks.

5. (9) GIBRALTAR CARLSON (4-1): Coach Jason Gendron scheduled a season-opening game against Airport to get ready for the Downriver season. That plan has worked perfectly as the Marauders have reeled off four straight dominant league wins and seem on a collision course with Allen Park for the league title.

6. (6) SMCC (2-3): Coach Adam Kipf knew there would be some growing pains with a very young roster. The Falcons showed some moxie last week by holding off a three-win Milan team. It's going to be a tough closing stretch with games ahead against Riverview, Flat Rock and Detroit Country Day, but SMCC will be dangerous if it makes the playoffs.

7. (8) DUNDEE (3-2): The Vikings made it to the midway point of the season with a winning record, despite losing quarterback Ryan Zanger for several games because of an injury. Ethan Layton did a great job of filling in. The team faces a tough closing stretch with games against Clinton, Hudson and Ida on the horizon.

7. (12) IDA (2-3): The Blue Streaks suffered a three-game losing streak in games against state powers Whiteford, Clinton and Hudson. The schedule down the stretch is far more favorable. Coach Jeff Potter's team is poised to finish strong.

9. (2) BEDFORD (1-4): The Southeastern Conference Red is unforgiving. The Mules have played well at times, but opposing teams have been making them pay for their mistakes. League heavyweights Saline and Dexter are in the rearview mirror, so a few more wins down the stretch are possible.

10. (10) MILAN (3-2): The Big Reds have struggled to find consistency. Impressive wins over Jefferson and Grosse Ile have been followed by frustrating losses. The schedule ahead is daunting. Coach Jesse Hoskins' squad plays the three teams tied for first place in the Huron League the next three weeks.

11. (11) ERIE MASON (2-3): The Eagles snapped a three-game losing streak with an impressive win over undefeated Summerfield last week. It will be a tough test this week when defending state champ Whiteford comes to town, then the schedule lightens up for the final three games.

12. (6) NEW BOSTON HURON (2-3): Last week's win over Jefferson was essential for Huron. The Chiefs close their season with two games against 4-1 teams (Flat Rock and Airport) and two against 1-4 squads (Grosse Ile and Detroit Henry Ford).

13. (14) SUMMERFIELD (4-1): Dylan Szegedi started his career as Summerfield's head coach with four straight wins before losing last week at Erie Mason. The Bulldogs have two big challenges left on the schedule in 4-1 Union City and 5-0 Whiteford, but the other two games are very winnable. A playoff berth still is very possible.

14. (13) JEFFERSON (0-5): The good news for the Bears is that they already have games against Huron League contenders Flat Rock and Riverview behind them. They still have to face Airport and SMCC, but take on 1-4 Grosse Ile this week and finish against winless Melvindale.
