Velvet hat crochet pattern, designed with a stitch that is easy to work with velvet yarn

A lot of people find it hard to work with velvet yarn, so I have chosen a stitch that is easy to work using this type of yarn.

A wide half double crochet is used which means that the half-double crochet is worked into the gaps between the sts and not into the actual sts. This makes it easy to work with velvet yarn as you don’t have to see the sts.

The velvet yarn is a super soft yarn that feels luxurious. That said, the slippery nature of this yarn can make it hard to work with.

Velvet yarn is a hand-wash and flat-dry kind of yarn. That can be discouraging but if you are not someone who washes your hat frequently, this should not be a problem.

The yarn is prone to worming which is nothing but yarn loops jutting out. I went down one size from the recommended hook size to make sure my stitches are uniform. I would highly recommend you check your work every 2 rounds to make sure there is o worming.

So without further ado, let’s make the soft and luxurious velvet hats.

Materials

1. Size 5 super bulky yarn. The sample velvet hats were made using Bernat Velvet yarn in colors Shadow Purple, Burgundy Plum, and Vapor Gray.

2. A size J (6 mm) hook.

3. Tapestry needle to weave in the ends

4. A Fur pom pom (optional)

Finished Size

Toddler( 1- 4 Years): 9″ tall and 18″ circumference

Child (4 to 10 Years): 9 1/2″ tall and 19 1/2″ circumference

Preteen to Woman Small/Medium: 10″ tall and 20-1/2″ circumference

Woman Large: 10-1/2″ tall and 21-1/2″ circumference

Yardage

Toddler: 85 yards

Child: 95 yards

Preteen to Adult Small: 115 yards

Adult Large: 140 yards

Stitch Abbreviations

ch: chain

Stitch Explanations

hc2tog: YO, insert your hook into the space indicated and pull up a loop, YO again, insert your hook into the same space and pull up another loop, YO and pull through all the 5 loops on your hook to complete a hdc2tog.

fphdc (front post half double crochet) and bphdc (back post half double crochet): fphdc and bphdc are worked in the same way as a regular hdc except for the way you insert your hook. You can watch a video here: fphdc and bphdc video

Gauge

Start working on the pattern for the Child Size hat and complete 5 rounds. Now measure for gauge.

Pattern Notes

1. The velvet beanie is designed using a wide hdc stitch which is simply hdc worked into the gaps between the stitches. This makes it easy to work with velvet yarn because you just have to feel the gap with your fingers and insert your hook rather than looking for sts.

2. Every time the pattern mentions ‘space’ it is referring to the space between sts unless otherwise specified.

3. To count your sts at the end of a round, count back from where your hook is. Then you will know where to sl st. For example, at the end of Round 1, you should have 8 sts, so count back 8 sts from your hook and sl st into the 8th st.

4. Once we finish the crown part with increases, we will stop slip stitching at the end of the round and start working in a spiral which will make our hat work up quickly.

Toddler Size Velvet Hat Pattern

Ch 4 and sl st to the first ch to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 1 (does not count as a st here and throughout), working over the yarn tail, 8 hdc into the space in the middle of the ring, tug the yarn tail to close any gap at the top, and sl st to the first hdc, do not turn. ——8 hdc

Note: At the end of the rows, it will look like you have an extra space to work into but that is actually the space between the last st and beginning ch-1, so do not work into it.

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc in adjacent space right after ch 1, 2 hdc in each of the next 7 spaces between sts, sl st to first hdc, do not turn.——-16 hdc

Round 3: Ch 1, 2 hdc in adjacent space right after ch 1, 1 hdc in next space, *(2 hdc in next space, 1 hdc in next space), repeat from * until you work 1 hdc in the last space, sl st to first hdc, do not turn.———-24 hdc

Round 4: Ch 1, 2 hdc in adjacent space right after ch 1, 1 hdc in the next 2 spaces, *(2 hdc in next space, 1 hdc in next 2 spaces), repeat from * until you work 1 hdc in the last space, sl st to first hdc, do not turn.———-32 hdc

Round 5: Ch 1, place a marker in this ch 1, 2 hdc in adjacent space right after ch 1, 1 hdc in the next 3 spaces, *(2 hdc in next space, 1 hdc in next 4 spaces, 2 hdc in next space, 1 hdc in next 3 spaces), repeat from * until one space is left, hdc2tog in the last space, DO NOT sl st and do not turn. ——–39 sts

Round 6: Tighten the loop on your hook and directly work 1 hdc in the space under marked ch 1, move the marker into this st, 1 hdc in each space across until you work a hdc in the last space before the marked st, do not sl st and do not turn.. ———39 sts

Round 7: Work 1 hdc into the space under the next marked st, move marker into this st, 1 hdc in each space across until you work a hdc in the last space before the marked st, do not sl st and do not turn.——-39 hdc

Repeat Round 7 until your hat measures 7-1/2″ tall and work the rows below. The finished hat is 9″ tall. If you want to add more slouch to your hat, work more repeats of Round 7 before proceeding to the rows below.

We will increase 6 sts in the next row before starting the ribbing for the hat. I made the brim snug as it does stretch a little with use. If you want to make it looser, you can add more increases but make sure you add an even number of increases.

Ribbing Rows

Row 1: Ch 2 (counts as a bphdc), place a marker in the 2nd ch you just made, 1 fphdc in the first st, *(1 bphdc in the next st, 1 fphdc in the next st), repeat from * to end, sl st to marked ch, do not turn.——46 sts

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as a bphdc), place a marker in the 2nd ch you just made, 1 fphdc in the next fphdc, *(1bphdc in the next bphdc, 1 fphdc in the next fphdc), repeat from * to end, sl st to marked ch, do not turn.–46 sts

Repeat Row 2 one more time, and fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in the beginning and ending tail inside your velvet hat. While weaving in the beginning tail, pull the tail to close any hole at the top and securely weave it back and forth at least 3 times.

Child Size Hat

Ch 4 and sl st to the first ch to form a ring.

Note: At the end of the rows, it will look like you have an extra space to work into but that is actually the space between the last st and beginning ch-1, so do not work into it.

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc in adjacent space right after ch 1, 2 hdc in each of the next 7 spaces between sts, sl st to first hdc, do not turn.——-16 hdc

Round 5: Ch 1, place a marker in this ch 1, 2 hdc in adjacent space right after ch 1, 1 hdc in the next 3 spaces, *(2 hdc in next space, 1 hdc in next 3 spaces), repeat from * 5 times until you have 4 spaces left, 2 hdc in next space, 1 hdc in next 2 spaces, hdc2tog in the last space, DO NOT sl st and do not turn. ——–40 sts
