Game Recap: Baseball |
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Six pitchers combined for a six-hit shutout to lead the Hawai'i baseball team to a 2-0 win over Long Beach State to clinch the series Sunday.
The Rainbow Warriors have now won 15 of their last 17 games dating back to Apr. 16 and won their 34th game of the season – the most by a UH team since 2011.
Hawai'i pitching on Sunday held the Dirtbags to 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position to strand 11 runners on base. Brayden Marx worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and went two scoreless to earn the win in his first collegiate start. Zacary Tenn worked the next three frames and struck out two and Itsuki Takemoto threw the next 1.2 frames, highlighted by a lineout double play to escape trouble in the sixth.
Connor Harrison pitched out of a two-on, two-out jam in the seventh before working a 1-2-3 eighth and gave way to Alex Giroux to start the ninth. Back-to-back one-out singles put runners on first and second before a two-out hit by pitch loaded the bases. Giroux then induced a ground ball that Jordan Donahue ranged up the middle for and threw to first to end the game.
The 'Bows took an early lead with a single run in the first and second innings. Jake Tsukada gave UH the lead two batters into the game on a bloop double down the left field line that scored Donahue from first. Matthew Miura made it 2-0 in the second when he led off the frame with a double and came around to score on an Itsuki Takemoto RBI groundout.
The shutout was UH's fifth of the season – the most by the program since 2014 – while making it 10 straight games that the 'Bows have allowed four runs or less. It also lowered the staff's ERA to a Big West-leading 3.89 with one weekend to play.
The Rainbow Warriors return home for Senior Weekend at Les Murakami Stadium against Cal State Fullerton starting Thursday at 6:35 p.m.
